A
Missiological Seminar on the Life & Ministry of Rev. Gudina Tumsa, General
Secretary of EECMY (1966-1979) was launched in the spring of 2001. The
participants, who represented seven countries, were inspired by the lectures
and subsequent discussions. They resolved to hold a series of seminars to
revive and learn from his vision. Accordingly the second seminar was scheduled
for April 2003.
This year’s Seminar, entitled “Church and Society” will take place April 30 to May 3. Approximately five hundred persons are expected to attend the seminar. Speakers from churches in Germany, Norway, the USA and Ethiopia, who knew and worked closely with Rev. Gudina Tumsa, will present papers on his life and ministry.
Issues that were of major concern
to him and his church at the time, included integral human development, African
theology, ecumenical relations, self-reliance, the charismatic movement, the
cost of discipleship, etc. All will be addressed at the Seminar. The Seminar will also mark the release of
two books on Gudina Tumsa: The first book is entitled, "Witness &
Discipleship, Leadership of the Church in Multi-Ethnic Ethiopia in a Time of
Revolution" The second is entitled "The Life & Ministry of 
Reverend
Gudina Tumsa, Report Volume & Lectures of the Missiological
Seminar". Reverend Paul Hoffman,
the editor of the two volumes wrote in his introductory note, "...Gudina
Tumsa's life was snuffed out on July 28, 1979.
As witness to his Lord Jesus Christ, his voice was silenced. May the Missiological Seminar and the [two
volumes] contribute to removing what barriers still exist to prevent that voice
and that witness from being heard."
