Dandi Gudina is the very first school established to serve Karayu pastoralists of Fantalle District in East Shoa zone. Since its establishment in 1995 by Gudina Tumsa Foundation the school has been providing primary and lower secondary education for serving about 500 pastoralist children. With the provision of quality education GTF intends to produce young Karayu men and women who can articulate their needs and aspirations and who can efficiently represent their community and participate on local and national decision-making.

With this in mind GTF is in the process of establishing a high school where Karayu children can further their education. Failure to establish a high school for the Karayu would mean reverting back to the former way of life – cattle herding. This would mean loss of human and material resources invested to date.

GTF needs your support to sustain Karayu children in school. If you donate a dollar per day for a year you will feed, cloth and educate a pastoralist child.

A TREE IN THE DESERT

KARAYU WOMEN’S INITIATIVE

Among the various activities of GTF to preserve the ecology of the Fantalle area is a project entitled “A Tree in the Desert”. The project has organized a number of tree planting women’s groups. In these groups a woman may plant and successfully grow upto one hundred drought resistant trees. More and more women are being inspired by the Initiative and would like to take part. Your donation of a dollar per day for a month would enable a woman to plant and care for 125 trees per month or 1,500 trees per year. Be part of the Initiative by donating a dollar per day.
